I am writing this blog with a heavy and bright heart. As some may know... My Aunt Rita moved to Lubbock this week. I have spent the last week helping her sort thru 24 years worth of memories (some painful and some sweet). We were looking at the pieces of her past- deciding what was going to make it into her future, and what was going to be buried in the past. It such a poetic symbol of what Rita and I have spent the last year doing emotionally. We have been able to lean on each other and decide what we were finally going to leave in the past, and what was worth it to take with us into the future.
There has been many great family memories revived in our minds over the past week. Many of them were of the great times that were spent around her pool (aka- Cabana on Banner Elk). We had the flood in the dinning room, the time Mark was trying to be cool at the pool and ended up with stitches, the time Mark saved Katie from drowning, Ashley and Katie playing on the green blob, my face swelling to the size of a balloon because of the cats, and many many more. We have had some great times in that house, but memories will stay with us long after the house is gone.
Watching Rita take the first step toward freedom for herself in many years has been the most beautiful thing I could have ever been apart of. I am truly grateful to have been there to watch. Rita you are an amazing woman. I hope that I someday have your strength!
